The Guild Theatre, East London
The Guild Theatre is a dynamic playhouse theatre which is the heart of the performing arts in East London and the greater Buffalo City. This fully equipped theatre provides the perfect environment to enjoy the many and varied shows that have been featured there throughout the years.
It has been home to many famous local and international performers such as Mark Lottering and the Royal Moscow Ballet and is a favourite for local drama, stand-up, dance, school performances with plenty for the kiddies too.
The theatre opened it’s doors in 1962 after 9 years of fund raising by several interested community groups. Today, The Guild Theatre is the only fully equipped theatre operating in the eastern part of the Eastern Cape and serves communities as far afield as Alice, Queenstown, Butterworth and Mthatha.
In recent times, the Guild Theatre has launched ‘The show must go on’ campaign, aimed at raising funds to invest in systems to reduce the energy consumption of the theatre, as well as ensure that no performance is cancelled due to lack of electricity.
