Movember East London ~ power in the moustache!
Movember, that time of year when men are encouraged to grow their moustaches for the month, to raise awareness and funds for mental health, prostate and testicular cancer and other men’s health issues.
But it’s not just for the guys, the ladies can also get involved by supporting their men and promoting the importance of men’s health. The ladies who do get involved have the awesome title of Mo Sistas and as well as encouraging their men to grow a mo, they also participate in fundraising initiatives too, all in a bid to change the face of men’s health.
Movember is a global movement, which began in Australia in 2003. It has gone on to inspire support from more than 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world and over R5.7 billion has been raised and over 1,000 programmes funded in the commitment to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. The Movember Foundation declares that the state of men’s health is in a crisis and that men are dying too young. They report that, globally on average, men die 6 years earlier than women.
This is a shocking statistic and of course, we all want to do whatever we can to keep our men around for longer.
East London, being the wonderful community that it is, is always quick to rally around and help where possible, so when local businessman Jono Bruton launched Movember East London last year, the public gave their full support. Together with other business owners from Sanook, Poquet, Conlon & Associates and Pierre Marc Jewellers, The Deck Reck Crew was formed and a huge R43k was raised through driving action on social media platforms and fundraising events. Such was the success of Movember East London’s campaign that they were placed at the top of the Movember South Africa group leader board.
This year, the drive is no different and the team has been pushing the campaign in a huge way: just two weeks ago they hosted a Mo Sista Party at Sanook where an incredible R7k was raised: from entry fees, a percentage of special MoBurgers, MoBrews and unique Mo East London t-shirts.
Public support has been amazing since the launch of Movember East London last year and the team are thrilled to be involved in such an awesome initiative and to be able to play a part in raising funds for research and cancer prevention.
Already two thirds of the way through the month, The Dead Reck Crew are doing well in meeting this year’s target. The social media drive is as active as always and the public have so far been incredibly supportive in the campaign. There is still time to get involved, whether you wish to make a donation, purchase a Dead Reckoning t-shirt or a delicious MoBurger or MoBrew from Sanook.
There is also an End of Movember Party taking place at Emerald Vale Brewery at the end of this month, a final push to break records for Movember East London. It is going to be a fantastic event with live music, a spit braai, lucky draws, a mo’ auction, jumping castle for the kids plus a milkshake bar and of course, let’s not forget those delicious craft beers! It’s going to be a real fun family affair so take the kids along, have an awesome time and know that your involvement will go a very long way towards a seriously awesome cause.
