Kidd’s Beach Sustainability Forest
An inspiring vision for Kidds Beach became a reality on 1 July 2018 when a team of dedicated residents planted the first 16 indigenous trees that will grow into a beautiful sustainable sanctuary for future generations to enjoy, while also contributing to offsetting the village’s carbon emissions.
This exciting project is a collaboration between the greater Kidds Beach Community and MHG, which has generously donated to the project a stretch of land alongside the open sports field hugging the Main Road into Kidds Beach.
The focus of this project is three-fold: to protect and nurture existing trees on the land; to remove alien vegetation; and to plant a variety of hardy indigenous trees that benefit the land. In addition to the Wild Plum, Natal Mahogany, False Dune Current and Acacia species planted recently, the team will also plant White Milkwood, Coastal Silver Oak, Cape Ash and Waterberry trees, among others.
“By planting indigenous trees, we are giving back to and investing in our beautiful seaside village. Over time, the trees will grow into a beautiful Sustainability Forest for future generations to enjoy as a recreational area, ideal for picnics, walks and jogging under a canopy of tall indigenous trees,” says Janice Hurly, a Kidds Beach resident and the visionary behind this project.
“In addition, planting trees will, in time, help offset the carbon emissions generated by visitors flying or driving into Kidds Beach and by local residents commuting into town daily.”
Everyone is invited to participate in the Kidds Beach Sustainability Forest. The next tree planting will take place on Arbor Day on Saturday, 1 September 2018. Join the Sustainability Forest Team by donating compost or specific tree species, lending a hand with the planting or making a financial contribution to the vision of a greener and more beautiful Kidds Beach.
