Buffalo City Stadium, East London

The Buffalo City Stadium is situated next to the Jan Smuts Athletics Stadium in Recreation Road, Arcadia, East London.  Built in 1934, it was upgraded in 2010 in a bid to become a team base camp in the 2010 rugby world cup.

This multi-use stadium can hold up to 16 000 people was home to the Border Bulldogs and was used mainly for Border Rugby Union Matches.  In 2019 however, due to financial difficulties, Border Rugby closed its offices and the stadium is no longer home to the Border Rugby Union.

The grounds which are owned by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality have undergone 3 name changes.  Originally named the Border Rugby Union Grounds, the name changed to the Basil Kenyon Stadium in 1951, after a Springbok player of the same name captained the Springboks on a successful 3 month of England.

The name changed to the ABSA Stadium for sponsorship reasons and was later renamed Buffalo City Stadium (BCM Stadium) to reflect it’s geographical location.
