Evening entertainment in East London
In the past, East London may have been considered a somewhat sleepy place, but today you are spoiled for choice with everything on offer in and around the city.
There are a multitude of pubs and bars in East London, the majority of which feature live music from local and nationally-renowned artists. For a taste of some musical talent, then check out Monty’s, Hams Club, Wiseguys Bar & Grill, Abbotsford Arms, Nahoon Arms, Raggie’s, Fish & Farrier, Dezzy’s, Mr Hyde’s, Buccaneers and Catz Pub. If you prefer DJ events then head to venues such as Bar Kulcha, Pulse Nite Club, Oh! Mi Cocktail Bistro, Jacqueline’s, Club Eden, Jola’s Place, Q-Bar, Stellaz Place, E-Lounge, Swiss Loft, Jeff’s Place and The Deck. Most of the bars offer pub grub but if you’d prefer a sit-down meal then you can head to The Highlander, where you can also enjoy sundowners at the end of the day.
If the bar and pub scene is not really your thing then there are other options where you can expect top-class entertainment. The Venue@Hemingways is quickly becoming one of the most popular venues in East London for entertainment – here you can enjoy shows from Centrestage as well as comedy offerings from a variety of artists from all over South Africa.
A relatively new addition to East London is the Legends Showcase Venue where you can enjoy musical feasts from both up-and-coming and established artists. Other venues where you can catch live shows include The Guild Theatre, The Alexander Playhouse and The Arts Theatre. The Guild regularly hosts events from Centrestage and first-class comedians and musicians with The Alexander Playhouse and The Arts Theatre focusing more on the theatre side of things with everything from plays to ballet performances.
If you’re a movie lover then you can head to Hemingways which boasts an excellent cinema. It has numerous excellent restaurants so you can dine before you treat yourself to a movie of your choice.
If you fancy something completely different then check out Electric Avenue (located inside Hemingways), dubbed as ‘Next Generation Entertainment’ but very popular with both young and old. Here you can enjoy arcade games, action bowling, formula dodgems and action go-karting. Or head to Xtreme Valley where you can play a round of Night Golf and grab a bite to eat too.
East London is home to a number of beautiful beaches, which are of course an attraction for families, but also to those involved in outdoor activities and alternative sport/hobbies. One such event that might appeal to the latter is a night of Fire Dancing and Drumming, held every so often at the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve. Open to everybody, you can head down to the Reef Cafe with a blanket, sit under the stars and enjoy a free evening of fun and fresh air with fire spinners and musicians. A wonderful chance to learn or share your talents and creativity.
However you prefer to spend your time once the sun goes down, there’s plenty to choose from in East London to ensure a great night out.
