Tubing in the Berg!
This day trip is ideal for the family with an adventurous spirit. Set deep within the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands and Underberg the rapid flowing rivers provide an opportunity to take an adventurous tube ride.
Alternatively if golf or fly fishing is more your cup of tea, the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel boasts a superb golf course and there are a number of resorts in the area which boast excellent trout fishing.
Hiking trails and horse rides are also available.
Advice: Only adults and teenagers who are able to swim should undertake this adventure and groups of three to four people are recommended.
Distance:
Tubing Entry Point: 230km
Eland Valley Resort: 233km
Lake Navarone: 235km
Drakensberg Gardens Hotel: 236km
Day Trip Directions: Starting at the Spaghetti Junction head West, towards PMB, along the N2, remember to zero your odometer (odometer readings given in brackets). Pass through PMB and Hilton, remembering to keep right when the highway splits. Take the “Howick South/Underberg” exit, Exit 99 (90km). At the T-junction, turn left towards Underberg, and travel through Boston (126km) & Bulwer (166km). About 15min after passing through Bulwer you will arrive in the small town “Underberg”. Drive through the town and along the road for a couple of kms until you get to the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel turnoff to your right (+-209km) & turn right towards the hotel.
This road is rather winding, mostly following the river, take your time and enjoy the views. Shortly you should cross over a concrete bridge, after crossing over you will notice a pull-over spot on the right with a couple of landing rocks within the river (+-230km). It is advisable to have a driver stay behind with the less adventurous family members as you will no doubt need someone to pick you up after your 30min tube ride down the river. There are picnic spots along the river for those not accompanying the tubers.
Continue up the road a further 3km and you will reach the Eland Valley Resort, with brilliant trout fishing. A further 2km up the road from Eland Valley Resort will bring you to Lake Navarone, a stunning lake in the underberg, also stocked with trout. Travel a further 2km up the road from Lake Navarone to reach the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel for a Lunch or Round of Golf.

Hi, i’m a little confused where does one do the tube rides exactly? I mean, who is hosting it and how does it all work? The directions seem to be a general Midlands route and the images are beautful but don’t show any tubing? Contact details?
Thanks!

The tubing is not hosted by anyone. There are a few entry points along the river where one can basically enter the river. However this is not an organised tour as such.
This is something that a group of my friends and I did over a weekend. All you need is a few tubes and an adventurous spirit, I would also suggest life jackets to be on the safe side.
