Durban’s Mwimbi Fine Art Gallery
Currently functioning as pop up gallery in Durban, Mwimbi Fine Art Gallery was founded by Zimbabwean born Lee Garakara 2006 Gavle, Sweden 2006. Since the Mwimbi Gallery was operating informally while in Sweden, Lee worked and collaborated with local Galleries and artists. Mwimbi Gallery started operating formally in 2010 and has since kept abreast with the local and international art scene.
Among the 2013 scheduled exhibitions, one major highlight for the year will be a French Exhibition that will see two local artists Raja Oshi and renowned KZN ceramicist Clive Sithole travel to Paris for an exhibition as part of the France South Africa Season.(dates to be confirmed) Garakara will also be co-curating a 2014 exhibition with Danish artist Linda Bjørnskov in Copanhagen. This exhibition will require that Garakara, brings two up and coming female artist from South Africa to participate.
In addition, Mwimbi Gallery has been heavily involved with hosting conferences, filming, research and workshops in an effort to promote art and raise awareness within communities. Past exhibition, includes solo exhibition by Kristin Hua Yang which was held at the Alliance Francaise, Durban.
