The Outspan Tree in Westville
Where Jan Hofmeyr Road in Westville today runs, use to be the old ox-wagon route from Durban.
In the area opposite Westville Boys High School, on the corner of Jan Hofmeyr and Outspan Road is a plaque that commemorates the Outspan Tree. This is where the first overnight stop for the old ox wagons heading towards the interior was, prior to the construction of the railway in the late 1870s. An old Natal Fig was the landmark and today one of its offsprings still grows there.
