Spectacular views from Spy Hill in Pinetown
Spy Hill was formerly known as Beacon Hill, as there’s a survey beacon at its summit. During World War 2, when lights were seen from a house on the summit, it was assumed that there was a spy sending troop ship movements to a German submarine. The German who occupied the house on Spy Hill’s summit was arrested; the ruins of a house on the summit of Spy Hill are still visible.
From Spy Hill, you have a perfect view, all the way to the sea and inland. One can see why this may have been the perfect location for a spy or anyone wanting to keep an eye on the surrounding terrain. During spring there are veld flowers on Spy Hill.
Today, this is a public park where people can take in the view on a clear day. To get to the summit of Spy Hill, you need to head to Panorama Terrace in Kloof (near Wyebank); at the end of the road there’s a turning circle where you can park and walk to the summit. You can also take in some good views from Sunrise Place in Padfield Park.
