Re-opening of the Umngeni Bird Park
The Municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit has re-opened the Umngeni Bird Park, after it had been placed under quarantine since late October, due to the death of a Buffon’s Macaw that was killed by food poisoning.
The Umngeni Bird Park was placed under quarantine as a precautionary measure. During this time, the Park’s consulting and state veterinarians took 49 swabs from the bird population and the environment, all of which tested negative for Salmonella Enteritidis.
Certain protocols and processes such as sick bird treatment, first aid and vermin control were reviewed and updated. This was done to ensure the safety of the public, staff and bird collection. These include daily checks and monitoring of bird stock, safety clothing and the equipment utilised by the staff. The removal and disposal of waste from the closure and disinfecting the area will also be closely monitored.
The quarantine on the Park was officially lifted on Friday, 16/11/12 and the Municipality looks forward to a bumper holiday season with visitors enjoying the many delights, beautiful birds, the Free Flight Bird Show and natural surroundings which have been and still are the hallmark of the Bird Park.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Park to enjoy our bi-diversity and interact with the unique creatures that live in the Park.
