Mariannhill Monastery Graveyard & War Graves
At the Mariannhill Monastery Graveyard near Durban there is a small section containing military graves. The history of this graveyard not only includes burial sites of locals, but of soldiers who died at the Princess Christian Hospital too.
Most soldiers who died at the Princess Christian Hospital in Pinetown / Sarnia (in 1905 it was converted to the Fairydene Hotel and now it is the Fairydene Retirement Village) over the period 1900 to 1902 were buried at the St John’s Churchyard; however nine Catholic soldiers were buried at the Roman Catholic Mariannhill Monastery. This was during the period of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902.
