Glaciated Pavements “Ancient Glacier Rock Formations”
Did you know that we have some ancient rock formations in our midst…???
Located at the UKZN (University of Kwazulu-Natal) Durban Westville Campus, you will discover some local treasures dating back some 300 million years.
The rock formations can be seen just behind the Admin Building: Enter the Admin building’s main entrance, and walk straight toward the door leading outside – turn left, walk outside, and up the stairs through the arch-way, “you will see the Glacial Pavements right in front of you”.
Glacial Pavements are formed by rocks embedded in the slowly moving ice sheets “otherwise known as a Glacier” scoured and polished the underlying older rocks giving rise to glacial pavements.
You will notice on the close up picture above that there seems to be scratches on the Rock Pavements. The scratches were caused by the movement of the ice and boulders, leaving scratch-like markes on the rocks, “this is clearly visible”. You will also see different layers of rock, each layer holding its own mystery.
If Geology is your thing, then this is surely something that you might want to go see…
