City helps destitute families
MAYOR James Nxumalo has commended Durban citizens for their generosity. Speaking during a visit to three families in Cato Manor who lost everything when their shacks burnt down, Nxumalo said, “The Municipality’s Social Relief Fund is showing positive results. “The clothes and food given to these families in their time of need came from the fund and various stakeholders.” One of the good Samaritan Nonhlanhla Mthembu, who has given shelter to victim Olwethu Mdamba, said, “We thank the Municipality for their quick response”.
“The incident was reported on Monday and we were immediately assisted. The councilor in our area has also been very helpful and today we were visited by the Mayor who has offered assistance on behalf of the Municipality.” Mdamba, who lost her one year old son in the blaze, said, “I’m grateful to the Municipality for all the help they have given us.” Ward 28 Councillor Bhekisisa Mngadi said, “The Municipality has assisted the family with funeral arrangements. “Clothes, food, mattresses and blankets have also been donated to the three families. This relief fund is proving valuable in times like these when people need help.” He said the office of the MEC of Social Development had also contributed blankets and food. “We are now in a process of helping these families rebuild their homes.” Another victim Mxolisi Msomi said, “It is really hard for me. I don’t know what to do because most of the things that were burned by the fire, like my fridge and other electrical appliances, were bought on credit and I’m still paying for them. “I just hope the presence of the Mayor and our councilor means some form of assistance for us.”
