Let us be safe from fire
As part of the Municipality’s commitment to ensure safe, healthy and secure environment, the following fire safety tips will always come handy in case there is a fire in your area.
- Extinguish your fire immediately after braai; wind can pick up and spread sparks igniting anything combustible.
- Do not leave braai fire unattended, e.g. rushing to the shop for a spice.
- Always switch off any LPGas cylinder properly after use, turn the valve to the end until it gets tight
- Avoid carrying gas cylinders in your car on any trip, if involved in a road crash, it will reduce your chances of survival.
- If fire breaks out in a pot on the stove, don’t try to remove to throw outside, simply take a damp cotton material e.g. bath towel and rush to cover the top of the pot, you break oxygen- the fire dies instantly.
- If the fire is noticed too late when it is big, safely close all house openings like windows and doors- fire will be confined to area of origin till help arrives- DO NOT TRY TO EXTINGUISH IT YOURSELF, you may be seriously injured- rather lose property than the soul.
- If one’s clothes catch fire don’t run away, STOP-DROP and ROLL on the ground- fire will be extinguished, then use large amounts of cold water to reduce excessive body temperature whilst rushing to hospital.
- When calling the Fire Service- be calm, explain the address slowly, mention the local landmark- e.g. this is near Umrhabulo High School, behind Ekhaya Supermarket, give your contact name and numberto help responders to contact you to confirm address as they rush with lights and sirens, make yourself contactable until they have arrived at the address.
- Remember, time is very critical with fire- DO NOT DIAL- 10111 ( Police ) or 10177 (Ambulance )- this delays the Fire Service receiving the emergency call. People can be killed because of this delay.
- Always DIAL-031- 361 0000- 24/7/365 Emergency Mobilising and Communications Centre when reporting a fire or any emergency that threatens the lives of our people. Save this number in all your family members’ cell contacts and stick it on the wall somewhere at home.
