Exploring the Roosfontein Nature Reserve with Amblers
I’ve been wanting to explore the Roosfontein Nature Reserve in Westville for a while, but this is not a Nature Reserve that you can explore on your own. There’s no sign boards & no rangers, so it’s not advisable for you to go there on your own. Rather, keep an eye on the Ambler’s Hiking Club and the Ramblers Hiking Club programmes and join one of their hikes.
The entrance to this nature reserve is in Harry Gwala (Spine) Road in Westville, just before you get to Westville Prison. The Roosfontein Nature Reserve comprises 150ha of mainly grassland habitat. On this hike with Amblers Hiking Club, we meandered down to the Umbilo River.
The Amblers Hiking Club explores attractions in and around Durban every Sunday at 2pm sharp. To find out more about where they’re planning on hiking next, or to join the club, contact David on 031 266 8602 / 072 615 0559. Coincidentally, if high altitude training is what you need, then David is the person to speak to.
In short, my experience of hiking with Amblers at the Roosfontein Nature Reserve … well, it took me 10 minutes to find walking shoes in my cupboard and then I had to dust them off with a cloth – I think that is a good indication of my current fitness level? There were a couple of times during the hike when I was panting and wishing it would all be over. Now, I’m sitting here sipping my glass of wine and looking at the photos, very proud of my achievement today!
