Malibongwe Shangase – from KwaMashu to Switzerland
Malibongwe is a local artist, who grew up in Ntuzuma, KwaMashu. He thinks his family would’ve preferred him following a more traditional career path, or getting what he refers to as a ‘real’ job. The art bug bit him at the age of 6 when he started drawing and he cannot imagine life without art.
After finishing school he was watching TV and saw a programme about the Velobala Group from the African Art Centre. The Velobala Group provides art classes, allowing young people to explore different art media. Malibongwe joined these Saturday classes and from there was selected to train daily at the Bat Centre.
After excelling as a student Malibongwe was selected as a resident artist at the Bat Centre where he worked with ‘Masters’ and is now able to share his knowledge with the next generation of artists.
Malibongwe explains that he initially only chose art for the love of it and didn’t expect to be able to earn an income from this interest. He produces woodcut printing pieces and enjoys oil pastel drawing. He has travelled and exhibited his work around South Africa and in Switzerland and Berlin.
Where to from here? Malibongwe wants to continue travelling and exploring the world. He hopes to make his mark in the art world. He hopes that the public in general will learn to understand the value of art!
