Brief History of Margate
Margate’s history goes as far back as the prehistoric times; one of the exhibits in the museum is the skeleton of a man, believed to be Iron Age, which was excavated during the building of the Police Station in Fort Hill. Many Roman remains have been discovered in the area, including a Roman villa in Tivoli Park Avenue, found by Dr Arthur Rowe in 1920. In the 7th century, the settlements on the Isle of Thanet were owned by Minster Abbey, but peaceful development was interrupted by attacks by the Danes, throughout the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries.
