Monica Kissondath shares her passion for Photography
Tell as a bit about yourself?
I am a self-made entrepreneur who loves living life on my own terms. I love that I am scared and proud to make all my own career choices.
It feels so much more personal and fulfilling to create and work on your own ideas from start to finish without someone else trying to put their own spin on it.
I like being my own boss and being involved in a job that allows me to spend time nurturing my creative talents when I choose to do so.
In 2011, I enrolled to study the Professional Photography course part time through the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP) to enhance my technical and scientific knowledge on the subject.
I plan to use my hobby to give back color to our less fortunate communities (in particular Orphanages) by offering free photography services (Portraiture and Yearbooks) so these little kids can have memories of their younger, growing up days.
In 2007 a friend invited me to accompany him on a Landscape Photowalk for the first time and that’s where my love and passion for photography started. However, there was a surge of passion that started when I decided to study through NYIP….
What’s your favorite form of photography, example: Photographing landscapes, objects, people etc. and why this particular form?
I consider myself as a general photographer hobbyist who for now experiments with the different photography variations. Currently, I am enjoying People, Flora and Wildlife Photography.
What camera and accessories do you currently use?
I use the Canon 7D, Canon 600EX RT Flash, 24-70mm F2.8 Canon Lens, 70-300mm F4.5 Canon Lens, 100mm F2.8 Canon Lens, 50mm F1.4 Canon Lens and the 18-135mm Canon kit lens for now.
What makes your photography different to other photographers work?
In my opinion Photography is about using both an artistic and scientific approach. The art I use comes from the subject I am covering and the message that it conveys. The scientific approach I use comes from the lighting, equipment and technique that I use to create images that are different but very much my own unique style.
Do you have any advice to anyone wanting to become an amateur photographer?
Photography is a creative art which means that you have to compose the image in your head before you snap the picture. Let your mind be the paintbrush on the canvas, with that ability and an eye for detail, you will produce amazing images with a lasting impression.
Enroll yourself in a photography course as I have found the technical concepts are important or invest some time in reading the wide variety of topics available free on the web whatever suits your pocket.
Most all make sure your very first attempts are to learn all the functions of your camera and shoot, shoot, shoot!
What features do you normally like to shoot in, “most of the time” (manual, RAW, AV, TV etc.) and why do you use this specific setting most of the time?
I shoot mostly in Manual or AV mode and use RAW&JPEG combined.
