About Mark.g.
Mark.g was born in Pietermaritzburg in 1958 November the 2nd. His future in art was firmly established at the early age of 10 when he claimed a special prize at the Howick show.
Following up on this he studied under ceramics teacher Rosalind Dunn. Formal art schooling started at Durban Commercial High where Mark excelled in art and was awarded firsts in painting and drawing.This format continues as he achieved a distinction in practical art at Port Shepstone High in his final year. In 1980 Mark furthered his studies at Ruth Prowse art school in Cape town. The following 7 years were devoted to establishing himself as a commercial artist culminating in owning his own freelance advertising agency in Johannesburg (Gauteng).
On his return to Durban he worked in the art department at the Natal Witness, and the Natal newspapers prior to taking a course in fine art at the Natal Technikon in Durban. An extremely successful exhibition in 1990 allowed Mark the opportunity to travel Europe for 6 months prior to a 2 year stay in England where he studied art and furniture painting at Tromp-de lea in Hackney. On his return to South Africa in July 1992 he purchased 61 Regent Ave on the Bluff which he opened as a home and art gallery where he taught painting and pottery for 10 years. In 1997 Mark was a finalist in the Pavillion art festival. In 1997 and in 1998 Mark was a finalist in the Gauloises art competition and was flown to the Grahamstown festival to represent Kwa-Zulu Natal.
In 2001 Mark moved to Pietermaritzburg where he bought a house at 27 Mayors Walk and started a pottery and art studio where he teaches pottery and art and where he has done numerous commissions in oils, pottery and chalk boards. He has also had numerous very successful exhibitions there.
