eThekwini Deputy Mayor – Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala
NEWLY elected Deputy Mayor Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala is “deeply honoured” to have been entrusted with the position. The mother of four (one sadly deceased) comes from humble beginnings and has a reputation from her previous term as a community driven Councillor. Here numerous qualifications include certificates in financial management, executive leadership development, computer studies and waste technology. Shabalala has served the Municipality since 1995, first as a municipal worker and, later, as a Councillor, chairing various committees including Infrastructure and Health Safety and Social Services.
“The key to service delivery is consultation,” Shabalala said. “We need to go into our communities and talk to the people, hear what they have to say and what they need. We must then link this to our Integrated Development Plan and provide whatever they need.” In addition to serving as Deputy Mayor, Shabalala retains a position on the Executive Committee, which she described as a great responsibility. “We are the decision makers and we must realise that we are not doing these things for ourselves, but for the people of eThekwini.” Shabalala said. “Our citizens need to live a better, healthier life. Service delivery must be our key priority. There are a lot of things to be done, but if we work together we can do it. I will work hard and make sure that we work together as a team,” she said.
