Breakdancer Preston “Krazy Kayzo” Kyd
I represent the Breakdance crews Floor Assassins (Durban) and Concrete Apostles (Cape Town). I’ve been Breakdancing for 11 years, using my skills to compete, perform and teach.
I first started Breakdancing at the age of 12. A friend of mine who started Breakdancing, taught me and a group of friends what he knew. Since then breakdancing became my new hobby, practicing and refining my skills each and every day. Over the years I’ve gained more experience and wisdom within the dance by expanding my horizons. I’ve danced with Break-Thru Dance Company (a fusion dance style company) as well as the Flat Foot Dance Company (a contemporary based company). This has helped me to understand my body, allowing me to create my own unique style and original identity within the Breakdancing world.
I focus on a more acrobatic type of Breakdancing known as “Power Moves”. It is more strength orientated and focuses on more flips, spins, jumps and twists! I also like to incorporate some Capoeira influenced moves to my style giving it more flow and dynamics. Overall I like to show energy, crazy character/antics and originality when I dance, making the way I move interesting to watch.
I’ve performed at various venues and events around Durban, including performances at the Durban International Convention Centre, The Playhouse, City Hall, Suncoast Casino, even Birthday parties and Fashion shows! My favourite performances to date would be dancing as opening acts for Snoop Dogg, T Pain, Busta Rhymes and The Parlotones.
As much as I love to be on stage and perform, I equally love to teach and give back to my community. Over the years I’ve spent countless hours hurting myself trying to learn new moves. So it makes me feel good knowing that I can help guide those who are willing to learn and to take their dancing to the next level. I teach at a number of different studios in and around the Durban area, namely; Dance Direction International (Morningside), Dance Movement (Wentworth/Treasure Beach), Move Dance Studio (Ballito) as well as hosting Breakdancing Workshops at the schools DPHS and Kearsney College.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have travelled overseas over the years. With my travels came experience gained from either the cities I visited or from the people I met, and that includes the dancers that I met! Meeting and training with Breakdancers abroad helped inspire me as well as give me a new understanding of the dance. I would like to see myself competing more at competitions overseas either representing myself, my crew or my country. I’m constantly working hard and pushing my boundaries so I can be the best that I can be, while at the same time inspiring others to achieve their goals. “Each One Teach One”
