The World Transplant Games 2013 kicked off officially in Durban today “28 July 2013” with a welcome from eThekwini Mayor, Councillor James Nxumalo, followed by a festive Beach Walk along The Golden Mile.
The ‘meeting of the nations,’ during a beach walk is a world-wide Transplant Games tradition. About 1 200 athletes and supporters walked, in national colours, with the giant World Transplant Games Beach ball.
Athletes gathered tonight for a special unveiling of a ‘first in World Transplant Games history.’ “This is the first time that a commemorative stamp has been designed especially for The World Transplant Games,” commented chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Willie Uys.
The South African Post Office has marked this special event by issuing ten stamps and two commemorative covers.
The artwork for the stamps depicting various transplantee sporting codes, was designed by Gauteng artist Peter Sibanda, in his distinctive bright and colourful style. Sibanda, who is an established stamp artist, received his first commission from the South African Post Office in 2001 to design the World Summit postage stamps.
