Hiking up Baviaanskloof
Start
The wonderfully short hike starts at Baviaanskloof Road in Hout Bay . Simply follow the concrete steps and amble a right into the valley near the palisade fencing. There ample parking for hikers in the road, however it is best to be cautious when parking though as you don’t want to upset Hout Bay Republicans by parking them in.
End
The Baviaanskloof hike does not go in circular path, but instead once you have reached the end of your hike, simply retrace your steps and head home.
Duration
The duration of the hike is relatively short. The main hike consists of a 700 meter trail to the waterfall, however the more adventurous spirit can go further and explore the forest at the end of the trail. The hike should take no more than 2 hours and is safe for children and the elderly.
Permit
There are no permits required to enjoy this leisurely and scenic hike.
Features
The Baviaanskloof hike is known for its seasonal waterfall that is simply breathtaking. It is best to find out when it is active, because it is the perfect conclusion to your hike. The waterfall is surrounded by shade and lush greenery and can be the perfect spot for a picnic or a book. There is also the small forest past the waterfall if you follow the firebeak trail. Here you enter a pine tree woodland that is reminiscent of a Grimm’s fairy tale. For the really adventurous deviate and take a hike up to Klein Koppie and take in an unobstructed view of Hout Bay.

- Good walking shoes
- Insect repellent
- Refreshments and water
- Camera
- Binoculars
- A warm top, in the event of sudden weather change
Please Note
The trial does pass through a thick patch of blister bush and it advised to stear clear of these pesky plants. Although they only blister when the skin comes in contact with the sun, reactions can vary from a mild blister to feverish red rash. If you take children along, please do not let them play in this area. When the waterfall is active, the rocks surrounding it can be slippery and it is advised to tread carefully if you move in for a closer look.
Description
Baviaanskloof is a short but sturdy hike with incredible sights along the way, from rock formations to waterfalls and indigenous greenery. It is a pleasant walk and hikers of all ages and experience will have relatively no trouble conquering even the trickiest bits of the trail. It is best to take this hike early in the morning when the sun is not as fierce yet and the fine spray off the waterfall is still dusting the morning dew in pasture surrounding it. Baviaanskloof is not about the view, but instead about the hidden gems just beyond the concrete steps.
