Dirt track into Giba Gorge
I had heard so much about Giba Gorge and couldn’t wait to ride it. We were staying at Grassroots B&B in Gillets which was 3.5 kms from Giba so I rode there at around 8 am in the morning after getting directions from the owner of the B&B. After a brilliantly fast ride down a tar road I found the dirt track into Giba. It went down and down and down and never seemed to end. At last I came accross a man handing out passes that you then had to take to the main building and get stamped when you paid. R50 for the day. Worth every cent!!
I had no idea where the main buildings were and someone had mentioned the green route which I saw a sign for on my left so I started riding the green route and it was fantastic!! Challenging switchbacks and serious drop offs that produced a few exclaimations of adrenaline filled joyous fear. The single track rides so well and is pretty well marked. At last after a particularly hair raising drop off I got to the end which happened to be where the main buildings were. I settled my bill and went in search of a route map and a cold drink as it was very humid.
After studying the map and chatting to a couple of locals I decided on the blue route next. With a bit on it called Gravity Dice!! heh heh yes it was a fast and furious downhill single track filled with fun. This after a serious climb up was just what the single track gods ordered. I had died and gone to heaven. It was soooooo much FUN!! I did it twice!!! : )
I can honestly say that it was a truely fantastic experience. The whole gorge is beautiful. It has a waterfall and lush vegetation with rivers all over the place. There are horses to ride, hiking trails, places for kids to play and trails with varying degrees of difficulty for all to ride. There is also a BMX track!
