Donate to Breadline Africa : A Charity With Heart
Breadline Africa is an internationally registered charity that seeks out partnerships of hope and growth in Africa.
Every child has the capacity to do something phenomenal with his or her life.
When a child’s imagination is unlocked, possibilities are opened up, allowing them to choose a path for their own future. Breadline Africa enables this journey by providing infrastructure, in the way of refurbished shipping containers, to early childhood development centres in need. Breadline Africa are also huge believers in the value of lending a helping hand, and each year we host various initiatives for communities in need.
We have set ourselves the ambitious target of 1,000 infrastructure development units placed in communities and schools throughout South Africa by 2023, positively impacting on the lives of more than 250,000 children.
We believe that through partnerships, we will achieve this goal.

Breadline Africa is an African-based charity that aims to break the cycle of poverty – by helping communities to help themselves. At Breadline Africa we believe that children and young people hold the future in their hands. To provide Africa’s children with a brighter future, we concentrate on this sector of the community. We provide infrastructure, in the way of refurbished shipping containers, to early childhood development centres in need.
At Breadline Africa, we carefully select projects staffed and run by local communities, with a reasonable chance of long-term sustainability, that would struggle to find other funding. Staffed by local community members, these containers provide much-needed facilities – such as kitchens, classrooms, crèches, skills workshops, libraries, and ablution blocks.

Education holds the key to a better future – for each child – and the world. As Robert F. Kennedy once said: “The greatest truth must be recognition that in every man, in every child is the potential for greatness.”
Many crèches and preschools in poor townships care for and keep children safe, but they need more to develop and achieve their full potential. Breadline Africa provides essential infrastructure in the form of containers that have been refurbished into classrooms, kitchens, libraries and toilet blocks. We also support the essential training of poor women to transform them into qualified teachers who can provide for all children’s needs – educational, nutritional, health and emotional.
A good early childhood education gives these youngsters the chance of a brighter future. Your gift will help us continue this vital work – and improve the lives of thousands more children in the future. High unemployment and a lack of education combine to rob many youngsters of the chance to find a job or make an honest living. Breadline Africa supports innovative programmes that offer unemployed youngsters in disadvantaged areas a life-changing opportunity to learn basic skills like plumbing and bricklaying. They are also assisted with finding a job or starting their own business. These young people can then stand on their own two feet and support themselves, as well as their families.
This training gives youth who are unable to attend tertiary education institutions through lack of funds or illiteracy the opportunity to learn a vital skill. In this way we are breaking the cycle of poverty by helping young people take a step out of the cycle. Your gift will help us to continue our support for these community programmes – and help youngsters to escape from the poverty trap and build a brighter future for all Africans.

Breadline Africa’s primary goal is to not only help children do better in school by ensuring that they have safer spaces to learn in. It’s difficult to focus on learning when the roof is leaking and the temperatures drop in winter. Teachers also struggle to help their charges when they are worried about the children hurting themselves on a broken board or rusty nail. Many units that Breadline Africa replaces are unsafe and cramped – hot in summer and cold in winter.
In the library project, the knowledge that there is a dedicated space to read – to develop a love of reading … to lose oneself in a book – is invaluable. It’s a haven from the noise and demands of home and a doorway to a completely different world.
Our containers provide affordable, safe, versatile and inexpensive shelter for many projects, and if necessary they can be relocated easily to new locations.
Although Breadline Africa’s primary focus is on providing infrastructure solutions for educational facilities and developments, we are also huge believers in the value of lending a helping hand, and each year we host two food parcel drives for families in need, one in the South African winter and the other at Christmas.
We also know that children’s horizons are broadened by new experiences, and so annually, we send hundreds of children under the age of seven to a magical day at the seaside. Although so many of these youngsters grow up within a couple of kilometres of the ocean, for many of them, this is the first time that they see waves breaking on the beach and have the opportunity to build sandcastles.
