Ikhaya Le Themba

is a home-based Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that equips and trains underprivileged communities to care for their chronically and terminally ill. This extends to empowering the affected and their inter-reliant families and dependants to handle the implications of their disease and death. The support provided by Ikhaya Le Themba is multi-faceted and touches various aspects of the lives of the people they provide aid to.

This includes, but is not limited to;

• Offering platforms that enable care-receivers to generate income or means through which they might find sustainable employment.

• Care for orphans and vulnerable children.

• Feeding stations, as well as a soup kitchen at the TB clinic in Khayelitsha. During the course of their ceaseless work Ikhaya Le Themba has and continues to affect great change and invaluable support to the lives of the people they supply aid to.

Home Based Care

Our home based care is simple, effective and well established. It consists of some of the following aspects:

• Overseeing the administration of TB and Antiretroviral treatment.
• Emotional and spiritual support.
• Referrals to other basic services e.g. social workers.
• Maintenance to homes in situations that are life threatening.
• Upgrading of basic living conditions in aid of promoting improved health.

Guardians, Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

Implement training for participating carers and guardians within the community to ensure:

• Mentoring towards adulthood.
• Continuous monitoring of both physical and health status of OVC.
• Interventions, in circumstances where there is no extended family able to aid OVC or when family members are unable to assist.
• Support with regard to protecting and ensuring the best interest of the child. (This may include the assisting with accessing of grants or benefits).
• Prevention awareness with regard to orphans on HIV/AIDS and various other relevant infections.

Community Awareness and Skills Development Support Groups

• Education of community through Wellness Support Groups.
• Soup kitchen in order to provide for patients and in some cases their families.
• Provide monthly food parcels for families.
• Assisting guardians with school uniforms, school fees as well as activities.
• Providing critical home maintenance to the homes and shacks of our patients.
• Establishing income generation projects. For example the selling of second hand made clothing, as well as a sewing and beading group.
• Teaching the community to grow their very own vegetables.

Home Based Care

• A community centre that can act as a base of operations, from where basic medical services can be accessed by our care-receivers.
• To have the means to employ full time Carers and a HBC Co-ordinator.
• Medical supplies and equipment.

Support Groups

• Quarterly outings.
• Increase monthly food hampers.
• Treatment packs for skin care and hygiene.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children

• R20 000 sponsorship for Youth Leaders camp.
• Quarterly outings for the group.
• School uniforms and clothing.
• Sound equipment.

Community Development

• Sewing machines and materials.
• Beads and equipment.
• Building supplies and paint.
• Gardening supplies.

Training Struggling Communities

• Audio visual equipment.
• Funding for quarterly training.
• Home based care kits for candidates.
