A Retirement Centre and Low Vision Community Services

Helen Keller Society
'The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision'
- Helen Keller

The Society specialises in accomodation for the blind, the visually impaired and other retirees over the age of 60. We celebrated our 60th anniversary in aged care in 2018. The complex is set in beautiful water-wise gardens, offering 24 hour security. The various living facilities consist of 25 en suite Cottages for independent living (no nursing); 50 rooms for assisted living (some en suite), and 9 apartments in the Syd Askew suites, with limited nursing services in these two areas, plus 40 beds in our Care Centre, offering professional 24 hour nursing care.

Our Low Vision Community Service, established in 1998, offers advice, support and give assistive devices to any visually impaired or blind person within the community, who have either consulted with our occupational therapists at the Groote Schuur, Eersterivier or Tygerberg Hospitals’ eye clinics, or pupils from the Athlone School for the Blind, or, to a resident or client who has consulted at our Resource Centre here at the Society. The department currently runs 8 support groups throughout the greater Western Cape.

We also sponsor a few residents who meet a certain criteria. Tariffs are available upon request.

Please contact Matron Jackie or Ruth during office hours for any further enquiries or e-mail
