Thousands flock to Loftus to help Cape Town
On 31 March 2018, during the Super Rugby clash between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and the DHL Stormers, close to thirty thousand people joined Jacaranda FM in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the Cape Town water crisis with Project Waterdrop.
The project is specifically focused on installing boreholes with solar pumps at the schools that are most heavily affected in the Western Cape, at an estimated minimum cost of approximately R50 000 per school – offering sustainable, meaningful and cost-effective assistance to those in desperate need.
“Final figures are still being tallied, but, through the sincere effort of Jacaranda FM’s listeners, including the likes of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Solly Msimanga, Kagiso Media’s CEO, Mark Harris, Victor Matfield, Jean de Villiers, Bakkies Botha, Kobus Wiese, Jack Parow, Dewald Wasserfall and our very own Martin Bester, we managed to raise thousands of Rands which will enable us to aid and assist schools in need of our help”, says Jacaranda FM’s GM, Kevin Fine.
The first borehole is scheduled to be drilled on Friday, 22 June 2018, and will provide water to two schools located in severely impoverished communities: Ocean View ELSN (Education for Learners with Special Needs), with 100 learners and Kleinberg Primary, with 600 learners.
“We also collected more than 210 000 litres of water on the day, which the team at DHL has kindly offered to transport to Cape Town. This is a fantastic start and we’d like to encourage individuals and companies to please continue contributing in the months to come to enable us to help many more schools.”
