Photographer David Lurie’s Undercity: Revealing images of the “other” Cape Town
Since the end of apartheid, South Africa’s model metropolis, Cape Town, has made a great leap and is now a tourist destination, a place where ads are shot or the upper class builds their homes. But behind the beautiful façade, unemployment and the struggle for survival dominates as it always has, although it is quickly overlooked.
South African photographer David Lurie spent his early morning hours wandering through the city looking for this “other” Cape Town that we just don’t see, and now, in his new series and book, Undercity – The Other Cape Town, he presents a portrait of a vulnerable city. All of these photographs were taken in the early morning hours, when Cape Town is still asleep, delicate and vulnerable.
