Kensington business fire extinguished
A business owner in Kensington has praised a security officer who helped ensure that a fire did not engulf his workplace this week.
Armed response officer Mlindeli Matroos was responding to a call-out from an engineering business on 15th Avenue (at around 18h50 on Thursday 12 October 2017). He conducted a perimeter check of the business premises on his arrival but could not see anything suspicious.
“Officer Matroos did however notice a funny smell that resembled burning plastic, and continued his investigation to see if there was any indication of a fire. It wasn’t much longer before he noticed smoke coming from one of the building’s roller doors, and he immediately contacted the fire department as well as our client,” says Jade Hanning, district manager (Cape Town South) for Fidelity ADT.
When the fire department arrived to attend to the fire, they discovered that a welding machine inside the building was left on and that it had caught fire. The fire was extinguished before it could spread.
“Our client thanked officer Matroos for spotting the smoke and raising the alarm, before the fire got worse. Business owners should always test their security systems – including fire alert systems – to make sure they ae working properly. Call a technician today if you haven’t tested them recently,” says Hanning.
