Crystal Symphony sets bar for cruise tourism in Cape Town
Cape Town’s new cruise liner terminal was abuzz in early January with the six-star luxury Crystal Symphony ship welcoming 848 travellers for the start of a 25-country world cruise – marking the first time a world cruise of this magnitude has departed from the Mother City.
South Africa’s shadow minister of tourism, James Vos, was in attendance to celebrate the occasion. He highlighted how investments were being made into cruise ship infrastructure in the port city, which was determined to tap into the massive growth of the cruise industry globally.
Vos said Cape Town was poised to become a “cruise tourism hotspot,” and that already R50m had been invested into the upgrading of cruise facilities. He said that management of the iconic V&A Waterfront intended to operate the terminal building as a multi-use facility, which would bring year-round activity.
“Without a doubt, the cruise line industry offers enormous potential for tourism growth, and therefore the extension of the V&A Waterfront experience to the cruise terminal will hold the key to prosperity,” said Vos.
