4 reasons to send your staff on corporate-focussed courses
The corporate world can be a difficult place for new staff members to fit into.
Not only are there significantly more departments and policies in place than smaller companies or startups, but a lot of jargon as well.
Your staff is going to need to be adequately trained to fit in with the corporate world.
Not everyone can do it, but those willing to try need to be adequately taught.
And, although you may not have the time to teach every new staff member about the intricacies of the corporate world, there is a range of courses they can be sent on.
Here are a few you should consider with your staff and company in mind.
The art of communication
Whether it be over email, face-to-face, or talking on the phone, communication is an essential part of any business. Basically, it’s the lifeblood of a company looking to form deals and bring in new clients. There are a lot of nuances to communication and how your staff interact with each other and with those outside of the company.
Communication courses will help them to send elegant emails and have excellent phone manners. Apart from that, they will also learn how to convey their means and tasks in a relevant way as to get their point across. After all, many problems in the workplace can come from misinterpreted meanings and words that don’t correctly convey what the speaker is saying.
It would be beneficial to send managers on corporate communication courses along with the newer staff members. Though these seniors may have years of experience, that doesn’t mean they are able to tell others what needs to be done in a project.
Conflict resolution
Politics are a part of any company, regardless of size. Staff members need to be taught how to resolve conflicts within the company and with co-workers or senior levels of staff. No company can work with an internal conflict and those involved screaming in the middle in the office or in front of clients or even being passive aggressive.
Conflicts happen at every level of a company and should be dealt with as soon as possible. These courses may even encourage staff members to step into HR roles, which would benefit the business overall.
Time management
A big issue in any company dealing with projects – especially those that are client-focused – is time management. This may include billable hours or just how long a team or individual takes to complete a task. If employees aren’t adequately managing their time, there is a problem.
This doesn’t always come down to just the employees carrying out these tasks, either. Your sales people and project managers need to be able to adequately allocate time. They have to be aware of how much time a task takes and how long employees take to complete them. Those that cannot manage their time properly will end up overpromising and under-delivering on a project, which can put the entire team and company in a bad light.
Time management may need to include software that is able to do so, recording the activities of staff. Of course, there is a downside to this, which adds extra pressure to employees, which means it should be used for analytical purposes.
Time management is not only essential in the corporate world but most walks of life as well.
Project management
And, finally, project management is the core of many corporate projects, from advertising and dealing with clients, to building a new system to specification. Each and every project needs a manager that can adequately delegate tasks, and understand the strengths and weaknesses of their team.
As with the other points in this article, both managers and staff members should be able to handle projects that are given to them. This does not only apply to the project manager, who may be trying to make sure everything runs smoothly, but to employees in order to see any problems with processes. Critical and analytical thinking needs to be taught to staff on every level, which will result in a more efficient company.
Those are just a few of the reasons that employees (and managers) should be sent on training courses. Even though these will cost the company extra, apart from salaries, they will help to weed out those who don’t fit into the environment and those who want to learn.
