Top braai spots in Cape Town
Hungry? Tackle your hunger the South African way – with a braai. Nothing says easy-going like the sound of a sizzle with a waft of smoke.
Braais are the essential year-round South African celebration and braais are always a big deal. Whether you call it a tshisa-nyama, a barbeque or a good braai, it’s something all South Africans embrace and enjoy.
Here are some of the best places in Cape Town to enjoy a good braai.
Newlands Forest
Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Newlands Forest is a favourite among walkers, trail runners, leisurely trainers, serious hikers, nature lovers, picnickers and locals wanting to let off steam after a gruelling week at the office. This is a very relaxing and wonderfully scenic place to fire up the coals. Either bring your own portable braai stand or use one of the built-in braai pits.
Mzoli’s Place, Gugulethu
Located in the bustling township of Gugulethu, Mzoli’s is one of the most popular braai spots in Cape Town. Endorsed by the likes of British chef Jamie Oliver, Mzoli’s is loved by celebrities, tourists and locals alike. You’ll find all sorts of cars in the parking lot – from used BMWs to taxis. On Sundays, it gets pretty packed so, while you may have to queue for food, it’s a good way to soak up the famous vibe. You don’t prepare the meat yourself, just bring your own drinks, crockery and cutlery. However, those who prepare the meat, braai it to succulent perfection using their signature sauce, herbs and spices to ensure a tasty meal.
Helderberg Farm
Nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, this rustic farm has public braai areas with small benches, as well as private braai sections in Granny’s Forest, which can host up to 200 people. Braaing aside, there are a number of fun activities to help you work up an appetite, including: paintball, trail running, laser-shooting, strawberry-picking and hiking. You will love the farm’s traditional South African charm and friendly atmosphere.
The Backyard Grill Lounge
With rustic picnic tables, an enclosed bar and spaces to lounge around in the backyard of this Sea Point restaurant, you get to relax while somebody else does the braaing! You’ll love that you can sit back and wait for your meal to be delivered to your table, hot off the coals. All you need to do is select your meat (or seafood) and side dishes, such as mealies, veggie kebabs and salads. The best part? You get to enjoy the braai without smelling like you’ve been to one.
Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif
Worth visiting for the views alone, both Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif in the Cape Point Nature Reserve are famous for their great braai and picnic spots. There’s also a safe tidal pool for the kids. Bring your own grid and wood, and don’t feed the baboons! You will love the unparalleled views of endless ocean, rugged rocks and dizzying cliffs, not to mention the rich fauna and flora.
Whether you’re celebrating with friends or loved ones, unite around the fire and braai proudly!
