The Stevenson Art Gallery in Woodstock
The Stevenson Contemporary Art Gallery is one of Cape Town’s art Galleries thst is truly worth a visit. Stevenson gallery is hidden away in Woodstock in the Buchanan Building on Sir Lowry Road.
The Stevenson gallery opened in Cape Town in 2003 by Michael Stevenson. David Brodie subsequently partnered with Stevenson and opened up a space in Johannesburg in 2008.
Every 4-5 weeks you will find a new art exhibition featuring outstanding contemporay works of art
The gallery hosts a variety of group and also solo art exhibitions in line with contemporary art practice in South Africa. The Stevenson is strong on giving South African artists the opportunity to access the rest of the world with its FOREX programme. This was started in 2009 and has brought the work of international artists like Francis Alÿs, Rineke Dijkstra, Thomas Hirschhorn, Glenn Ligon and Walid Raad to South Africa, often for the first time.
The Stevenson art gallery has a very active publication programme. By means of published catalogues for many of its exhibitions, the artists are able to achieve additional publicity for themselves. Global Art fairs are very important to the Stevenson gallery given its location and they have participated in Frieze New York, Art Basel, abc (Berlin), Frieze London, Paris Photo and Art Basel Miami Beach.
