The kit you need to start mountain biking
Ever wondered what equipment you would need to start mountain biking?
For people who love the sport or are avid cyclists these kinds of questions are second nature.
But, if you are a beginner you are most probably unsure of what equipment is needed and where to get it.
Want to know what the essentials are to start mountain biking and why are they important? Here’s what you will need to tackle your next outdoor adventure.
The bike
It is a no-brainer that the most important piece of equipment you are going to need is a bike. Obviously, actually owning the bike is important but if you’re not completely sure whether you will commit to this new sport then perhaps test out a few bikes first before looking at mountain bikes for sale.
Once you have decided on the brand of bike you would like, head down to your local cycling store and they will be happy to answer all your questions and guide you. Don’t rush into buying the first bike you try out. You’re going to want to try the bike out and make sure you are comfortable on it and that it meets all your cycling needs.
Helmet
Once you have chosen the bike it’s time to look for a helmet. Mountain biking can be a very dangerous sport and therefore you should always take precaution.. Different cycling brands have various styles and sizes of helmets so take your time to try out various options until you find one that is comfortable. Your helmet should be level on your head and fit snugly. It shouldn’t be able to flop forward and back and there shouldn’t be excessive movement if you tug on the buckle under your chin.
Gloves
You’re going to want to invest in a good pair of gloves. Not all mountain bikers wear gloves but it’s a good idea to buy a pair while you are learning to ride. One bad crash can leave your hands full of scratches, or worse, fractured or broken. A good pair of mountain biking gloves can help reduce the soreness caused by the vibrations of riding as well as the impact of a fall. They also add grip to the bars which is crucial to your safety. Try various sizes and types of gloves on before choosing a pair that suits you and the level of riding you will be doing.
T-shirt
Now that you have the standard kit you’ll want to have the dress code that goes with it. You can ride with a normal t-shirt but using a riding-specific top will fit better and is made from breathable material that will help keep you cooler. Try on various brands and sizes and find one that fits snug without riding upwards if you lean forward. The type of cycling shirt you choose will also depend on the season and the times you cycle. If you find yourself doing early morning or late afternoon training sessions, you might want to consider investing in a decent windproof or waterproof jacket.
Cycling shorts
Cycling shorts are also something you will want to buy. You are going to need a pair that are comfortable and that don’t ride upwards or cut into your thighs. As a beginner, you will find it can be painful to sit in the saddle for long periods of time. If this is the case, look at buying tights with padding in them. These tights add an extra layer to help you feel more comfortable in the saddle.
Water bottle
Lastly, you must ensure you have a water bottle that can fasten to your bike or fit into your bike bottle holder. You must stay hydrated while you ride so make sure you have enough water available throughout your biking session. Freeze water the night before as drinking cold water will make you feel more hydrated and energised. Try to avoid drinks that are high in sugar while cycling as this will lead to spikes of energy followed by a sugar crash that will make you feel lethargic. Speak to an assistant at your local cycling store about what types of drinks you should consume when cycling. They’ll be able to guide you and give you the best advice.
