Fresh food and alternative markets
When it comes to fresh food and alternative markets in Cape Town you are spoiled for choice.
The neighbourhood market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock on Albert road is becoming so incredibly popular. If you drive down Albert Road on a Saturday morning, you will not only struggle to find parking but you will be completely enveloped in the hustle and bustle of all types of arty people dashing in and out amongst the second hand furniture and clothing stores that line the streets. Everybody is having coffee in the trendy and somewhat whacky coffee shops and ambling along admiring the creativity.
People are trading and bargain hunting and generally enjoying the fantastic vibe. If you are new to Cape Town or here over a weekend break, I highly recommend going to the Old Biscuit Mill.
The real highlight after ambling all morning is to hit the food section where you will find anything and everything under the sun from home made waffles, to woodfired breads, cheeses, honey, chocolates, mushrooms, oysters, sushi, pesto, coffees, wines and fresh organic produce. Everything is eco-friendly, hand picked and organic so it tastes really, really good! What’s even better is sitting on a hay stack to enjoy your lunch.
If you are looking for something more conventional but excellent in terms of choice do try Fruit & Veg which is growing in popularity nationwide. An especially good branch is the Fruit & Veg at Willowbridge on Tygerberg Road. Not only is their fruit and veg of outstanding quality, but they also sell the most meltingly delicious fillet steak.
The Milnerton Market is another unconventional setting on a piece of land between Table Bay & Marine Drive in Paardon Island and takes place every Saturday & Sunday. You will find it’s not the prettiest of markets but on a Saturday and Sunday do go there to find the old cookie tins you have been hunting for, or the porcelain dolls you want to add to your collection, teddy bears, CD’s, books, vases, dinner sets, silver wear and the list goes on.
Greenmarket square in the centre of town is another great option if you are looking for mostly African crafts, curios & jewellery or try the Rondebosch market on the first two Saturdays of every month for homemade gifts and deliciously tasty pancakes and jams.
If you are in the Kirstenbosch area, on the last Sunday of every month (except in July & August) go to the Stone Cottages across from the Botanical Gardens and see what you can find there.
Finally if it’s deli food you are looking for with an Italian flair, Giovannis family owned deli & restaurant in Sea Point is a real winner amongst the locals. Before or after you have chosen your delicious eats ranging from all types of real Italian pasta to ready-made lasagnas and beautiful salads or roasted vegetables, you can casually hang out with some interesting characters by propping yourself up on one of the bar stools and ordering an espresso whilst watching the world go by. It’s very popular.
