How to get creative with your garden fence
Making the decision to have wooden fencing surround your garden was a very wise decision.
But you’re looking at it now and it’s not very exciting at the moment.
Yes, you’re being eco-friendly by having a natural wooden fence, but the initial excitement is fading away.
Don’t worry and definitely don’t regret your decision to install wooden fencing.
There are so many different ways in which you can get creative with your garden fence.
And the best part is that you can change it up in the various sections of fence.
You could really have a lot of fun with it and here are a few ideas to get you started.
Make it bird-friendly
You can set up shelving sections along your fence to play birdhouses or simply hang the birdhouses from the fence itself. Everyone loves a little bird activity in their garden and it can become a morning routine of feeding the birds and spending a few minutes in the peaceful garden before rushing on with the rest of the day.
And you want birds in your garden because they’ll help you out by getting rid of plant pests, control the weeds situation, help pollinate your plants and you’ll be part of environmental conservation which is always a positive thing.
Birdhouses are also a great way to bring some colour to the wooden fence and the more houses you have, the more colour, character and birds you can enjoy.
Activities for the kids
Every parent is on the hunt for unique ways to get their kids away from the TV screen (or any screen for that matter) and out into the garden for some fresh air. Children’s minds need to be stimulated and, for them, they aren’t going to want to sit in the garden and relax. They want to play and do things.
Your garden fence is the key to getting them outside. Setting up a chalkboard or using chalkboard-paint on the fence, gives your kids the opportunity to, essentially, draw all over the fence. An activity very similar to drawing all over the corridor walls, but one you actually wouldn’t mind encouraging.
You could even dedicate a section of the fence for your kids to press their paint-covered hands all over. You can also get them to start their own garden-on-the-fence by taking their old wellington boots, filling them with soil and teaching them how to grow plants in them. A fun activity for the both of you, plus your kids will be learning a new skill.
All these activities will keep them interested in the garden and they’ll end up going outside more often and you’ll have an interesting addition to your fence, which is the goal.
Express your creativity
Wooden fences are the perfect canvas for textured and rustic murals. You can paint a picture of whatever you want over the entirety of your fence or in certain feature sections. Then you can have a project to keep you busy in your free time and you won’t be able to complain about your wooden fence looking like, well, just a wooden fence.
Plants for the fence
Vertical gardens are all the craze right now and that is something you can do along your wooden fence. This is a great idea for people who have really small gardens with not enough space to plant on the ground.
But fully covered vertical plant walls aren’t the only way you can incorporate plants to the fence. You can get creative by hanging tyres and planting in them, setting up planter-box shelves and scattering them along the fence or even, more simply, hanging pot-plants along the fence. After all, what is a garden fence without a garden on it?
Light it up
Some people already have plenty decorative goodies and beautiful plants blooming in their garden and the wooden fence is the solid background that garden needs. But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do to enhance the look of your garden fence. Lighting is your friend.
If you have a garden bed along your fence, try placing some mini spotlights shining up through the plants and against the fence. This will create beautiful shadow images and you’ll be able to appreciate the gorgeous colour of your fence, even at night.
Other lighting options include hanging glass jars with candles along the fence or even just fairy lights along the top. Even these seemingly small additions can make all the difference.
Add a window frame and other random things
If you find you’re holding onto old random items, then your garden is the perfect place to do something with them. There are so many unconventional planter box ideas. We’ve already mentioned children’s wellington boots and tyres, but watering cans and old suitcases are other examples.
And when it comes to your fence, anything that can be hung, nailed in or supported on the fence, can go onto the fence. If you have an old window frame that you don’t know what you do with, stick it on your fence and intertwine some ivy in the “windows”. You can really go all out with almost all the random things you have lying about.
So, get creative with your garden fence. And if you feel like you’re missing out on the fencing fun (or are looking to expand your fence-canvas), you can find quality wooden fencing in Cape Town.
