How to buy a gift for someone you barely know
So, you’ve been invited to a birthday celebration by a new friend or acquaintance. You really like the person so you’re looking forward to it. The only problem is that you have to buy them a gift and you have no idea what to get. You want to make a good impression but don’t know where to start shopping.
But don’t worry, here are a few options to guide you in buying the perfect gift for someone you don’t know very well.
Something luxurious
Take what little you know about the person and put it to good use. It’s hard to go wrong with things like artisan soaps or hand creams. Try to think of the kinds of luxurious items people don’t usually buy for themselves. Avoid ornaments or household decorations if you haven’t seen the person’s home. You don’t know whether it’ll match the aesthetic. But flowers are always a favourite.
Consumables
Wine and chocolates are always a good idea. If you know of a place that makes delicious treats in pretty packaging, that could do the trick. Obviously you can’t just buy them a bar of chocolate from the corner store. It needs to be something special that they’ll bring out on a special occasion and not something they’ll leave lying around the house. If you buy them wine or champagne, make sure you know their preferences. You don’t want them regifting a nice bottle of red because they only drink Sauvignon Blanc.
Gift vouchers
Sure these are impersonal, but if you don’t know the person well it could be the perfect gift. Don’t just get them a general voucher for a shopping centre. Rather go to a store you know they’ll like. Woolworths is always a popular choice as they have a wide variety of options to purchase, from clothes to good wine. Try using what little knowledge you have of the person’s interests before you make your decision. For example, are they an enthusiastic reader or an aspiring chef?
Of course, there is no guarantee that you’ll buy the right gift. Spend some time thinking carefully before you make the purchase. Even though the Consumer Protection Act may in some instances allow you to return items to the seller, that may not always be possible when time has lapsed or the store has policies in place which prevent you from doing so.
However, whatever you purchase, your new friend will most likely appreciate the effort and thought you put into it.
Remember, they are aware that you don’t know them very well and are probably impressed that you got them a gift in the first place.
