How versatile garden fences really are
Many people look out of their bedroom windows onto their gardens and wonder what is missing and what will make it look better.
Garden fences are one of those versalite additions to your garden that can, in fact, make it better in more ways than one.
Also, they’re a cost-effective solution to a garden décor problem.
Fences have more functions than most people give them credit for. Their sole purpose is not only to section off the property. We’ll be looking at wooden fences and their versatility that could be the addition to your garden you’ve been looking for.
For privacy and protection
The obvious function of tall wooden fences is to maintain a sense of privacy on your property. Keep the rest of the neighbourhood out and the privacy of your own home, in. And it doesn’t have to be a large wooden block, there are various trellis and edging designs that can be used to match it to the rest of the house. Actual privacy fencing isn’t very appealing to the eye, so choosing a regular wooden fence that stays within the fencing height limit of the area, would be the preferred option.
As for protection, we’re referring to your precious garden beds and planter areas that you’d rather not have the kids or pets running around in. This is where the little picket fence comes in to, cordon off your flower areas. You can trail the fence around the entire garden or have a designated flower area where you have a wooden gate within your wooden fence that you can enter when you need a garden escape. In which case, you’re still using your fence for privacy, except, it’s from your family instead of your neighbours.
And just like that, you can have your “white picket fence” in your garden. And depending on the shrubs and plants you choose to grow behind the fence, even those can add to the privacy factor of your property.
Put up for safety concerns
Fences can also be used as a safety measure and, to fulfil this function, they are usually used to surround the pool area. Families with small or young children that require supervision, would rather have a fence around their pool than a cover or net that could still result in an accident.
The type of fence used to surround pool areas are usually waist-high picket fences or wooden latte fences with a securable gate for access. Net mesh fences are also popular, but wooden fences add character to the garden while ensuring your child’s safety.
As a general rule, however, you would prefer to have slits in your pool-fence as it still enables you to still see through to the pool from the outside. This makes it easier to supervise from the patio without getting splashed every five seconds.
Another safety feature of fences is to separate certain sections of the garden area. For example, you might have a front and back garden. And, if your pool is in the front garden and you aren’t too keen on putting a fence around it, you can place a fence on a halfway mark to stop the front and back gardens from joining. That way, your little one will be able to play outside without you worrying about them getting into the pool area. It can also be useful for pets when you have wary guests over who would prefer the animal to be in a separate section.
Garden décor
While your garden fence provides security, protection and privacy to your home, you can use it as garden décor at the same time. Wooden fences can be transformed into anything you want it to be. You can keep the natural textures and colours of the panels as you buy them or you can paint them any colour you want.
Garden fences are also the perfect platform to hang things from and turn your ordinary garden into a magical one. Fairy lights and lanterns can hang from the fence and create a cosy and intimate atmosphere after dark. You can also add shelves to your fences and use it to store your garden tools. At least this way they will be easily accessible and organised.
It’s also possible to grow plants on your fence by integrating unique planter boxes that can be hung on it. Your children’s old gumboots, for example, will make an adorable planter for flowers and will effortlessly bring colour and character to your garden.
Something else that will include your kids and the garden is to take blackboard paint and paint a section of the fence where your kids can be creative and draw outside. It’s one way to get them out of the house and it counts as free wall-art for your garden.
