Guess which SA city has made most inspiring running destinations list?
Many runners tend to get to get a bit stuck on their favourite routes – up the street, down the promenade, dawdling at the robots, dodging pedestrians and toying with the idea of running up that one hill but never really getting to it.
Sometimes the best way to test your limits and achieve something – no matter what your level is – is by running in a new environment – free from distraction.
Redbull announced its top seven inspirational running destinations in the world and Cape Town has been listed as one of them.
According to adrenaline junkies, the further away you travel from the distractions of the modern world – the deeper your running experience is said to be?
If you are thinking of taking a sporting holiday in 2016, here are some breathtaking locations to #FindYourEscape
1. ICELAND
Running in Iceland is surprisingly greener than one would imagine. There are thousands of kilometres to explore, and up to 80% of the country is uninhabited.
The sparse planes and the unusual terrain is known to inspire musicians, poets and runners from all over the world. Make sure you are equipped to navigate deep fjords and glaciers, advises Iceland Travel.
Running in Nepal is a mix of challenging climbs and adrenaline fuelled peaks. The mountains of Nepal are known for their secret spots and high-altitude experiences.
3. ANTARTICA
If you love peace, quiet and witnessing the power of nature at its highest, then a trek through Antartica is for you.
Redbull says the sunrise in the antarctic just cannot be described. It is the ultimate challenge of the senses – with the cold simply forcing you to run like never before.
4. CENTRAL PARK
While this may not be as ‘authentic’ as the others – it really is one of the most iconic city runs in the world.
If city running is your thing – then challenge yourself to get to New York and run through Central Park. It’s a good combination of city / countryside runs.
5. THE DESERT – EGYPT
Nothing is more challenging than running in sand and extreme heat – but nothing is more mesmerising than running through the pyramids and desert sands in Egypt.
Christian Schiester told Redbull, that desert running, “frees your mind in a way that I have never experienced before.”
6. THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA
This challenging run includes hundreds of steps and is over 8 000km long. If travelling through China, why not backpack along villages and run a few k’s every day.
7. THE CAPE – CAPE TOWN
Running along one of the world wonders in Cape Town is literally running to the end of the world, says Redbull.
From easier runs up Lions Head to more challenging runs around Cape Point – the views of the ocean, wildlife and fynbos make these runs gorgeous.
