Interviewed:
Jess Visser [Costume, Styling and Make-up Artist]
Yaaseen Kader aka Cader [Hairdresser/Model]
Lorien Bolus [Film Editor]
Renée Rossouw [Architect]
Werner Viln [Model/Illustrator]
Johan Funkster [Hairdresser/Make-up Artist]
Where do you cut your hair, which hair salon do you recommend and why?
Jess: I think a very cute place is Love in Dunkley Square. I love the aesthetics and they’re so affordable. I also really like Cader in Rondebosch because he’s professional, personal and a hot, straight man.
Cader: I go anywhere, as long as they give a good hair cut.
Lorien: The two places that have really stood out for me are Terenzo and Scar. Terenzo is very chic and relaxation orientated with shaped beds where you can lie down and have your hair washed. It’s so tranquil with dim lighting, calm music and not too much chattering.
Werner: I cut my hair at The Lobby. Craig is a very creative guy and he keeps his space very relaxed and personalized.
Renée: Natural Image on Buitenkant. It’s really cheap, close to my work and I can go between 13:00 and 14:00. The staff are also really nice, yet sometimes I cut my own hair but this causes quite the stir with my hairdressers! Most people say that Scar is the best place in Cape Town, but I never go to mainstream places. I don’t want fancy anything or stylist opinions, I just want someone who will give my hair moisture and do it in the quickest time possible. Nobody wants to sit under a dryer for 3 hours.
What is your opinion about Scar?
Jess: I think they’re overrated because they’re quite average. Their marketing is amazing but I don’t know why they think they’re so special.
Lorien: I enjoyed Scar because they’re fun and trendy. They have a young feeling to them and a loud vibe. They also have a cool mirror on the ceiling so you can watch other people getting their hair washed. Also… AMAZING head massages.
Do you enjoy working at Scar and is Scar the best in town?
Johan: Yes I enjoy working at Scar. The difference in working here as opposed to working at any other hair salons, is that at Scar, you are allowed to be exactly who you are, and as a creative individual, this platform allows me to create new out-of-the-box hairstyles. I have not really worked at another hair salon in Cape Town, but the question about them being the best in town…? I know that Scar is definitely under the top 10 all round hair salons in Cape Town; it has a really good name, so one can’t go wrong, right?
What is different about your favourite hair salon?
Werner: I love the old-school atmosphere at The Lobby. I also really enjoy the friendship-based attitude that Craig has towards his clients. It makes me feel like I can pop in for a coffee just to chat.
Cader: Well my hair salon is all about a personal service and taking one client at a time. Contrary to other hairdressers, I really love working with curly hair and believe that hairdressing is an art.
Jess: Cader is awesome in that he offers smoothies and organic meals with your haircut.
Where would you never go for a haircut due to rumours or bad experience?
Renée: Any place that rips me off. To date I have found Partners Hair to be really expensive, yet they’re really good and have this tiny girl nicknamed Yster who gives the best head massage in the business!
Jess: Pink23 is a hair salon, that do just does whatever they want and they don’t do what you asked for.
Johan: There are too many places to mention that I’d rather not name any. What I can say, is that I’ll never go to a hair salon that has a bad reputation or untrained stylists.
What would your general opinion be regarding Hair Salons in Cape Town?
Jess: Most hair salons are over priced and pretentious.
Renée: Due to my unique hair, I’ve been to a good share of hairdressers, but generally I have found that most Cape Town studios give very friendly service. It’s definitely a very competitive market!
