8 inexpensive ways to spice up your home
Creating a change in your home doesn’t have to cost a fortune or take weeks to complete. There are simple, affordable ways to freshen up and give every room a boost. You don’t have to give a room a full-on makeover to make it feel new. Here are eight easy, cheap and speedy ways to spice up your home.
Lighting
Changing just a few key light fixtures in the rooms you use most often can give that rooms a lift. Whether you change a ceiling fixture, add a ceiling fan, or buy some table lamps, the fixtures and the light they cast can change the atmosphere of the room.
Add a touch of colour with paint
There’s no need to repaint a whole room, but you can still easily update a space with paint. Opt to accentuate a wall in a vibrant hue, or with something that complements the current shade. You can also paint a rectangle in a contrasting colour above the coach to really brighten up the room.
Edit your accessories
It’s easy to end up with shelves full of home accessories. But crowding a room with too much stuff can keep things from looking fresh and polished. Go through your current crop of accessories and aim to cut your collection by half.
Flooring
New flooring doesn’t have to mean expensive, exotic hardwoods and natural stone tiles. There are a variety of laminates and vinyls available that can replicate the look of expensive products for a fraction of the cost. They’re also pretty easy to install yourself. And there’s no need to redo your floors all at once, pick your two most used rooms and start there.
Change your bedding
Pick out a new comforter or pillow shams to instantly jazz up the bedroom. Maybe grandma’s quilt has been on the bed for long enough and it’s time to bring out the Caribbean feel you’ve always wanted. Try out some trendy striped, solid or botanical bedding sets. The floral patterns will allow you to enjoy modern bed sheets for years to come.
New faucets
Updating your kitchen and bathroom fixtures can give those rooms a much needed update. Most of them are easy to install, with no plumbing experience necessary.
New artwork
Maybe it’s time for some new family photos on the walls, or a different arrangement to what is already there. Look for some new paintings or posters or reframe something you already have and love. You don’t have to get the works of the old masters; something you like presented well can change a room.
Plants
A well placed, large plant can hide an ugly fireplace or unused radiator. Smaller plants with bright blooms or leaves add colour to a room and plants can set the mood of a room.
