Ace your K53 test like a pro
The first time on the road can be nerve-wracking for any first-time driver.
Getting over the fear of driving on freeways and other main roads can be a horrid experience if the learner driver has no confidence on the road. In many cases learners know how to drive, but their fear of causing an accident inhibits them from progressing. Not everyone follows the K53 way of driving and for a learner going for their drivers test, it can be stressful when other drivers start hooting behind them.
There is nothing to fear
Regulate your breathing the moment you feel anxiety knocking at your door. Take deep, slow breaths and count backwards from 10. By regulating your breathing, you will feel more calm and in control. The saying “practice makes perfect” has proven itself over and over again. Practice your driving in a quiet area, where you can get used to stopping, turning, signalling, reversing, and so on. Doing this will aid you in learning how to control the vehicle and where to find the controls without having to look at them. You will be at ease due to the fact that there will be no other traffic to worry about. When you feel more confident, move your way up to driving on busier roads.
Familiarise yourself with the road rules
Go over the the K53 rules of the road on a regular basis, so that they are always be fresh in your memory. It’s easy for a new driver to feel overwhelmed and forget everything they have been taught, but knowing the guidelines by heart will enable you to never forget road signs, traffic law, right of way and other driving tips.
Tailgaters are the worst
When it looks like tailgaters are right on your bumper, it can be incredibly stressful for a new driver. In cases like these, tap the brakes a few times to indicate to the other driver that they are not maintaining a safe following distance. When that doesn’t help, gradually slow down until they eventually pass you. This is also good time to test whether you may need to go to one of the many roadworthy testing centres in Cape Town to check your brakes.
Remember, don’t tense up when you encounter a speedster behind you. When you see another vehicle coming up from behind and aggressively changing lanes, stay in your lane while maintaining your speed at a safe following distance.
