Indian comedian Karou Charou brings Hot & Spicy to the Mother City
The enigmatic and charismatic Karou Charou burst on the scene just over eight years ago. Whilst many comics play the club scene for a good few years, honing their skills before producing a one man show, Karou launched his career with a one man show.
The show was an adult show called Kama Sutra, which dealt with sex within the Indian community. The show premiered with three sold out shows, and went on to sell out a further four shows when it returned a month later by “Public Demand.” Karou then took the show on tour across the country, selling out a further 10 shows.
Karous’ subsequent one man shows “Don’t Dalla wid da Masala”, “Madhir” and “Kama sutra 2” went on to achieve further sold out successes at premier venues such as Izulu Theatre at Sibaya, Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City and Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace making him one of the most commercially successful entertainers on the South African circuit amassing a strong fan base both nationally and internationally.
His popularity was recognized by the international brand of McDonalds who handpicked him as the face of their Hot & Spicy burger campaign, which included 2 x TV ads, Street Billboards & cinema ads.
Karou Charou, whose real name is Mahdevan Moodley, has featured in Botswana & Zimbabwe and is currently working on a tour to Australia. Although Karou made his mark as an “adult” comedian he managed to garner a fan base that ranged from kids as young as 4 years old to senior citizens. Accordingly, Karou worked on a family show and that’s how Hot & Spicy was created.
Karou’s managing agent Sagren Moodley, says that the show will see the “turbaned one” perform some of his best material from his various shows over the past 6 years. Amongst other things, he will reveal why most Indians can’t swim? Why Indians choose not to play rugby and how Indians put the “Fun” in funerals? Mr Moodley added that Karou has a very interactive style which means the audience plays a big part in the show. His mental telepathy stunt which involves two audience members, a pack of cards, an egg beater and a blindfold will leave you gobsmacked.
With so many kids expected to attend Karou has a special segment dedicated entirely to them. For the finale segment Karou experiments with his new-found Hypnosis skills and then of course there is the crowd pleasing “Cowboy Hoedown.” Hot and spicy is a 90-minute roller coaster of non-stop laughter, for the whole family.
