Ukutula Lion Lodge
Situated on beautiful 260 ha bushveld farm less than an hours drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, you will find Ukutula Lion Lodge, which boasts a variety of antelope and more than 130 bird species , giraffe and zebra
Known as the “place of quiet” the lodge is nestled in lush bushveld where the roar of the lion can be heard for miles around.
Day visitors can choose one of their exciting programs which include the lion interaction program, a guided bush walk with lions or a combination of both of these packages. Lunch must be pre booked, although refreshments are included. Ukutula also offers game viewing on a safari vehicle or horseback.
Day visitors also enjoy the unique experience of observing and photographing the lions in their natural environment, and trained guides will assist young and old to experience the joy of holding a lion cub.
Ukutula Lion Lodge offer comfortable, fully equipped self catering accommodation in quiet surroundings, with a private braai area. All the chalets are air conditioned and additional facilities include two swimming pools, Jacuzzi, snooker table, cash bar and DSTV room.
Accommodation tariffs include interaction with young lions, bottle feeding demonstrations of cubs as well as a guided tour of the lion, cheetah and tiger enclosures. (The walk with lions experience is not included but is available at a discounted rate).
Ukutula Lion Lodge also offers:
- The perfect wedding venue which can accommodate up to 120 guests.
- School camps and tours.
- Conferencing Facilities.
- A volunteer program that allows participants to work in close contact with the lions.
- Spit braais, Potjie Kos and Braais.
Research projects are conducted by various scientists from Onderstepoort Veterinary University. Blood samples are collected and analysed in the laboratory. These tests determine what viruses and bacteria are carried by the lions. The results of project will hopefully assist the researchers in gaining a better insight in dealing with diseased lions in other game parks.
Ukutula hosts a unique volunteer program that allows participants to work in close contact with the lions. These volunteers get to care for the baby lions, bottle feeding them and seeing to their every need.
They also get the opportunity to assist our trained staff in the care of the older lions. Cleaning and maintaining the enclosures as well as helping with the feeding program.
If you would like to sign up for their ‘Lion Adoption Program” there are two available options:
- Shared Adoption-This option, which costs R500-00 per person, allows several people to adopt the same lion cub for one year.
- Exclusive Adoption-This option, which costs R 5 000-00, offers an exclusive opportunity of adopting a lion and becoming the “Foster Parent “of the cub for one year.
With both options you receive a certificate and regular updates on how your cub is doing.
As part of their social development program Ukutula have recently adopted a local rural school, Snymansdrift Primary School just a stone’s throw from Ukutula, and have undertaken to help this school achieve its full potential, where they intend to build a library, more classrooms, and help with the maintenance of the buildings.
