Bot River

Bot River is a small town that is set in beautiful rolling hills, overlooking a patchwork of wheat fields, that are ever changing, from emerald green to gold. The ideal climate for certain types of wines has encouraged wine makers to settle here and launch the Bot River wine of origin. Botrivier is a haven for nature lovers, wine tasters and artists, and the sheer tranquillity of the setting means a complete escape from it all.

The Bot River Lagoon and Walker Bay, which includes the very popular holiday town of Hermanus, are close by, and attract many visitors to the area.

Botrivier is close to the Kleinmond and Walker Bay, whale watching hotspots from June to November, and is an ideal place to get away from the crowds during the whale season, but still be able to have easy access.

The Bot River flows through the town into a large lagoon, which forms a marsh at its mouth. These wetlands are home to thousands of waterfowl and one of the only remaining herds of wild horses roams the area.

The beautiful Bot River Lagoon is a prime bird watching spot in the Overberg. It is incorporated into the Rooisands Nature Reserve, part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a bird hide and walkways create accessibility for all. You may get lucky and see the feral herd of horses that have made the lagoon home since the Anglo Boer War!

To fish on the Bot River Lagoon, you will need an inland fishing licence – available at Post Offices and the Kogelberg Nature Reserve office.
