SA Mint and Coin World Museum, Midrand

Coin World and SA Mint, MidrandSee how South African coins are made, from the earliest times up to the modern pressings of today.

The Coin World Museum, situated at the operating SA mint, has coins that reflect the numismatic history of the country as well as the interesting pieces of equipment that were used to manufacture coins and dies.

See the “Oom Paul” Minting Press, one of the oldest presses in the world, built in 1891 and ordered by Paul Kruger for use in the first mint which was established in Pretoria in 1892. The mint only moved to its current location in 1992.

More than 8 million coins were minted on the “Oom Paul”. The so called “Kruger millions”, Sammy Marks golden tickeys, special 1947 crowns for the visit of the British Royal family, the first decimal 1 cent coins in 1961, the first Krugerrand in 1967, the first gold Protea in 1986 and the first 2 rand coins were all minted on this historical press. The first of South Africa’s various other new 24-carat gold coin series were also launched on this press.

This is one of the only remaining presses of its kind in the world. “Oom Paul” was originally steam operated, but has been modified to work on electricity. Blanks are manually fed into the coining press and you can enjoy the unique experience of striking your own proof coin on “Oom Paul”.

You can also purchase gold coins from the Museum Shop. Coin World stocks all the standard current and previous year’s coin series. They also have a range of watches, jewellery and coin jewellery for sale.
