BALLITO’S SPCA DOG BOX IS MOVING UP
Impetus from Checker’s KZN has brought a much needed ‘upgrade’ to the SPCA Charity store in Ballito.
Fondly named ‘The Dog Box’ the charity store in the Boulevard Centre on Jack Powell Street has served as a collection and re-sale point for house-hold bric-a-brac and second hand books for years. All items are donated by the public and sold on to raise funds for the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
The store has of late taken on some of the character of the mangy mutts it serves…but with the help of Checkers KZN is undergoing a facelift.
SPCA volunteer Odette Hunlun approached her husband, Willem Hunlun (Divisional Director for Checkers KZN) for help. A proposal was put forward to the corporate office and the Dog Box is now undergoing a transformation.
Checkers KZN are managing the contracting suppliers and KK Shelving have already installed new shelving and clothing racks in the bric-a-brac area and are in the process of installing shelving for the thousands of second hand books in the ‘library’ sector. Checkers will sponsor baskets and other goods to complete the finishing touches. A newly tiled floor is also in the making, Checkers is currently negotiating with volunteer suppliers.
SPCA Dog Box volunteer Maggie Anderson is thrilled with the changes. There has recently been a noticeable shift in the type of customer frequenting the store. The well-heeled of Ballito recognizes the impact of supporting the organization but also appreciate the unique treasures found within the dusty corners of the store. The revamp will make it all the more satisfying for the customer.
The Night Market held in December was so successful, the Dog Box will be holding another Night Market over the Easter period. Although Second-hand books are what the store is famous for, the wide range of bric-a-brac, ornaments, kitchen utensils, jewellery and clothing also offer a trove of delight for the discerning customer.
The Dog Box welcomes donations of any sort but really need volunteers too. If you have an hour or two to spare, the charity shop could really use your talents.
All proceeds from the shop go towards funding functions of the SPCA including animal adoptions, animal housing at the local SPCA kennels near Zimbali, vets, transport and logistics.
