SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon to take the spotlight at Africa Marine & Leisure Expo
Set to take place in and around Scottburgh on the first weekend of November, the Africa Marine & Leisure Expo 2014 will once again bring all the fun and excitement for which it has become known over the last two years. This year’s event will see one very important addition to the traditional stalls, markets, activities and conservational speakers, however- and that is the inaugural SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon Event.
The triathlon will be the main sporting focus of this year’s Marine & Leisure Expo, and is being held in association with Triathlon Plus SA Magazine and SouthCoast Tourism. The event will follow an innovative format not previously seen in South Africa, with its three separate stages being held over the course of three days. This new format, as well as the event’s status as one of only a few triathlons currently held in southern KwaZulu-Natal, will act as a draw for top calibre triathletes while also keeping the event accessible for more casual entrants. With Scottburgh’s spectacular beaches providing a fitting backdrop for such displays of sporting prowess, the triathlon is sure to be a real hit with spectators as well.
The SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon will run from Friday 31st October through until Sunday 2nd November, with each day dedicated to one of the event’s three disciplines. By spacing out the running, swimming and cycling, competitors will be able to approach each section of the competition feeling fresh and able to perform to their very best. Additionally, each discipline will have separate categories catering to entrants of every age bracket, and those that take part will have the opportunity to compete either singly or in teams. The format of the new triathlon lends the event an exciting flexibility, meaning that competitors can choose to take part in one, two or all three elements. Those that choose to take on the challenge of the full triathlon will have their times added together over the course of the weekend to determine the eventual overall champion. Thanks to the extended nature of the SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon, the individual events on each day will be relatively short- giving spectators ample time to appreciate the rest of what the Expo has to offer whilst still lending their support to competitors.
The SouthCoast Strongman Triathlon promises to provide an unmissable showcase of athletic ability, as entrants battle it out to take the title in this exciting new competition. With its elements that take place both on land and in the water, it is also a fitting choice as the core event of the Africa Marine & Leisure Expo.
The Expo aims to celebrate humanity’s relationship with the ocean, whilst simultaneously exploring and promoting the concept of marine conservation. To this end, the event will also include tented stalls and exhibitions illustrating the work of both local and international conservation organisations, and a programme of lectures by renowned and influential speakers on the subject of environmentalism. Other highlights of the event include a children’s rock angling competition, an Outdoor Expo dedicated to all of the water sports for which the KZN area is so famous, a Craft Market, and the Food Truck Revolution Market. With plenty of fun activities on offer for visitors of all ages, the event promises to be not only educational and inspirational, but a great day out for all the family as well.
