Silent Killers in Our Personal Hygiene Products?
It seems that, no matter where we go or what we do, we can never get away from the detrimental effects of toxins, chemicals and a lack of exercise. Hidden in our make-up, our food, in the air we breathe, and in our own inactivity, these ‘silent killers’ seem to attack our bodies time and time again.
In today’s society there are many factors that jeopardize our health and well-being, most of which we are completely unaware of! In this article we will be looking at some of today’s ‘silent killers’ and also how to live an active lifestyle without feeling like you need to become the next marathon runner in your town.
Did you know that 1 in 8 ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products are hazardous industrial chemicals?
If this isn’t alarming enough to you, then consider this: the same chemicals that are used to keep concrete soft (plasticizers) and the same chemicals that are used to get grime off auto parts (degreasers) are being smeared onto your body and soaked into your skin on a daily basis.
This ‘not so pretty’ fact is what we all should think of before tinting our lips and moisturizing our skin with any random product off the shelf. Cosmetic ingredients such as Parabens (found in 75-90% of all cosmetics) have been proven to increase skin aging and DNA damage. They have also been proven to interfere with the hormone function associated with breast cancer. Aren’t beauty products meant to do the exact opposite???
It has been proven that sitting for extended periods at a time makes your body deteriorate at a faster rate, causing your muscles to shrink, affecting your sleep patterns and causing you to age at a faster rate
Our second ‘silent killer’ is sitting. Yes, sitting. It has been proven that sitting for extended periods at a time makes your body deteriorate at a faster rate, causing your muscles to shrink, affecting your sleep patterns and causing you to age at a faster rate. Studies have shown that standing up once every 15-20 minutes is better than 30 minutes in the gym and, looking at the statistics that show that 25% of South Africans are overweight, it seems like our country needs to do a whole lot more standing!
Another factor which contributes to the detriment of our health, something that most people forget to think about when trying to live a healthy lifestyle is the fact that the pH levels in your body are more important than one could ever imagine.
As much as you would like it to, your body cannot function optimally in an acidic environment. The quality of our water, processed and genetically modified foods, hormone fed animal products, air pollution and insecticides and pesticides in our” fresh” fruit and vegetables coupled with stress, environmental toxins and medication including antibiotics and antacids all contribute to acid build up.
Amazingly our bodies are designed to function at an optimal pH of 7.5. When this level drops below this number an acidic environment is created, making room for ailments such as depression, insomnia, foggy brain, indigestion, eczema, arthritis, cancer and gout. This is something to think about the next time you are standing in the MacDonalds queue, waiting for your burger, chips and Coke!
Our bodies are so fearfully and wonderfully made, and deserve to be treated with care. So whether it is using the right beauty products, exercising, or balancing your pH levels, make sure that you are repaying and thanking your body for all the hard work it does. Give it a well-deserved break from all these ‘silent killers’ which are making it cry out for help.
